Navigating the Voyage Dashboard
Last updated: November 21, 2025
The Voyage Dashboard is your central workspace in OpenTug. It combines map, list, and calendar views to help you monitor barge movements, voyage activity, and operational data all in one place. See our voyage dashboard video walkthrough here.
Dashboard Overview
When you open the Voyages page, you’ll see a flexible dashboard that can be customized to fit your workflow. You can switch between multiple view modes, adjust layouts, and enable overlays for detailed map insights.
View Modes
Use the View Mode dropdown at the top right corner of the dashboard to choose how your voyage data is displayed.
Mode | Description |
Split Row | Displays both the map and grid side-by-side horizontally. |
Split Column | Displays the map above or below the voyage grid. |
Map | Focuses entirely on the map view with asset and voyage locations. |
Grid | Focuses entirely on the voyage list for data-driven management. |
Calendar | Displays voyages based on scheduled dates and milestones. |
Stats | Shows aggregate data and metrics for operational reporting. |
Map Layers
The map view supports multiple visual layers to help you analyze fleet activity.
Map Layer – Standard map view with adjustable terrain overlay.
Satellite Layer – Real imagery view with optional label toggle.
You can toggle these layers directly from the map controls panel on the Voyage Dashboard.
Locks and River Conditions
Locks and river segments are dynamically color-coded to visualize current operational conditions.
Color | Condition |
🟢 Green | No or short delay. Lock operating normally. |
🟠Orange | Moderate delay. Expect longer queue times. |
🔴 Red | Closed. Lock currently unavailable or restricted. |
When you hover over a lock, a small window appears showing quick metrics like:
Queue count
Estimated delay time
Average processing time
When you click on a lock, a detailed drawer opens on the right side of the screen displaying:
Current upstream and downstream queues
Average processing times over the past 48 hours
Recent vessel movements and status updates
River Segment Indicators
Certain river segments may appear yellow or red, signaling current water conditions:
Color | Condition |
🟡 Yellow | Moderate flood levels or high flow conditions. |
🔴 Red | Severe flooding or navigation restriction in effect. |
Clicking a highlighted river segment will open a pop-up displaying:
Observed height
Observed category (e.g., low water, flood)
Forecasted height and category (if available)
These tools give dispatchers and operators quick situational awareness for voyage planning and delay forecasting.
Weather Overlays
Weather overlays allow you to visualize and forecast environmental conditions along major river systems for the week ahead.
Enable or disable weather layers using the Weather toggle menu (W icon) on the right-hand side of the map.
Available weather layers include:
Visibility
Precipitation
Wind Speed
Wave Height
Once enabled, a time slider appears at the bottom of the map, allowing you to move through forecast data for the coming days.
Use the Today / Tomorrow / Week navigation to preview daily changes.
Color gradients represent forecast intensity (from low to high).
These tools help operators anticipate conditions that may affect navigation or delay barge movements.
Overlays
Overlays add operational context to your map. Toggle overlays on or off using the Settings icon on the top right of the dashboard.
Available overlays include:
Ports
Locks
Mile Markers
These help visualize proximity and voyage progress along waterways.
Threshold Settings
Admins and operators can configure thresholds to better monitor idle, delay, and geofence conditions. These settings are accessed from the Settings icon on the Voyage Dashboard.
Setting | Description | Default |
Idle Threshold | Defines how long an asset must remain stationary before being considered Idle. | 12 hours |
Delay Threshold | Defines how long an asset must remain stationary before being considered Delayed. | 30 minutes |
Port Geofence Threshold | Sets the distance around a port to define its boundary. | 2 miles |
Terminal Geofence Threshold | Sets the distance around a terminal to define its boundary. | 0.4 miles |
Column Customization
The Grid View displays data from your voyages, tows, trade lanes, and assets. You can customize which columns appear to focus on the metrics that matter most.
Click Columns at the top right of the voyage table.
Toggle columns on or off to adjust visibility.
Reorder columns by dragging them horizontally.
To freeze a column, drag it all the way to the left edge.
For advanced customization, you can also:
Filter data by specific column values.
Save your preferred column layout as a custom view.

Tips for Using the Voyage Dashboard
Use Split Row mode to monitor voyages visually and by data simultaneously.
Save multiple views for different workflows (i.e. Operations, Customer Reporting).
Enable overlays only when needed to reduce map clutter.
Regularly review your threshold settings to align with your operational standards.
